Sri Pada Masters Red

Artisan Sri Lankan Tea

Price range: $3.00 through $58.00

An opportunity to taste the new wave of artisan Sri Lankan teas, showcasing what is possible when provenance, patience and craftsmanship come together.

From the rain forested area at the foothills of Sri Pada, some wild tea trees and original assamica bushes still grow. These trees have never been cloned or industrially cultivated. Instead, they have been carefully selected to create a truly distinctive artisan tea. Hand picked and transformed through a slow, considered fermentation inspired by ancient Chinese traditions of red tea craftsmanship.

Through years of experience, Buddika Dissanayake of Forest Hill Tea has worked tirelessly to pioneer specialty tea practices in a country known primarily for large scale teas. He understands the terroir and traditions of his home, and cares deeply about both the land and the people who live upon it.

By focusing on the finer details, from leaf selection and processing techniques to building connections with a global market, the growers of the Erathna Valley are creating teas with genuine provenance and value. Customer by customer, they are developing a new identity for their tea and creating opportunities that empower them to move forward.

We are incredibly proud to have been the first international buyer of their teas at the very beginning of their journey, and even more excited to have played a small part in their growth.

Controlled oxidation, gentle rolling and natural maturation allow the character of the leaf to develop gradually. The tea is aged in breathable wooden bins within Forest Hill’s traditional mud-house chamber, where the natural humidity and tropical rhythm of Erathna become part of the process. The result is a rich amber liquor of remarkable depth and elegance, revealing layers of vanilla, malt, dried apricot and soft woody tones.

This is Sri Lankan tea with a sense of place, carefully made, deeply connected to its origins, and a glimpse of what the next generation of artisan tea can become.
